Iconic costumes from some of the world’s biggest music legends are now on display at Manchester’s Hard Rock Café at The Printworks.
Michael Jackson’s red leather jacket from the Beat It music video, Madonna’s infamous John Paul Gaultier conical corset and a monochrome spandex catsuit belonging to Queen front man Freddie Mercury form just part of the amazing Hard Rock Couture collection.
But it wasn’t just the costumes that had pulses racing, Hard Rock Café legend Rita Gilligen MBE, who has waitressed at the venue since it opened back in June 1971, was there too.
For those who don’t know about the first lady of Hard Rock, she counts Elton John and surviving members of The Beatles as dear friends and is now cultural attache for the company.
I managed to get an exclusive chat, and picture, with her, check out the full Mancunian Matters interview here.
Can you believe that before yesterday I hadn’t stepped foot in Manchester’s Hard Rock Café? Utter madness!
This amazing exhibition chronicles the influence that musicians and singers have had on popular culture and fashion from the 1950s through to the present day.
Here’s Freddie Mercury’s catsuit worn during the 1978 Jazz tour.
Michael Jackson fans have the chance to get up close and personal with the red leather jacket he wore in his Beat It music video.
There are no fewer than 21 zips and chain detailing adorns this piece of musical history – isn’t it gorgeous?
One of the collection’s stand-out pieces was the conical corset Madonna wore during her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour.
She performed smash hit Like A Virgin while strutting around no stage in this lavish John Paul Gaultier creation shocking and wowing audiences in equal numbers.
I love the colour, textures and intricacy of this piece, it certainly would take some getting in and out of and, of course, check out those cones!
Fast-forward ten years and the queen of pop was going through her cowgirl chic phase.
This outfit gives a nod to the country and western inspiration but also vamps up the detailing to include lots of pink and sparkles… just what every girl would love to wear while strutting their stuff on stage!
I’m a big fan of the detailing here…just look at all those rhinestones!
Heir to Madonna and all-round wacky dresser Lady Gaga was practically low key in this lacy dress.
For any disappointed devotees she paired it with a typically outrageous ‘sun hat’ hairstyle when making a public appearance in Las Vegas back in 2010.
Don’t remember it? Click here to see the full ensemble!
Other items in this very special 20-piece collection include a catsuit, jacket belonging to The King himself, Elvis Presley, a teeny tiny Katy Perry dress and Brandon Flowers’ feather jacket.
This free exhibition is open from today until September 8.
